“I love the humor and the humanity of Vic’s work,” Smith says, “She’s really interested in breaking down notions of dance and dancer, which is similar to what we do, Who gets to dance, and who gets to say what dance is? McGuire agrees. “They were in an original power position that wasn’t available to any other Spanish women in a culture that does not want women to have power,” he explains. “You could be born very poor, but you could have an incredible voice, or sense of rhythm.  It rarely had anything to do with looks.  It was about sheer talent and creativity.”. “Even when women became involved in developing it, they still were kept from being singers,” adds Yaelisa. “Everything changed when Carmen Amaya came out on the stage and said through her dancing, ‘It’s OK for me to be masculine. It’s OK for me to be feminine.  I can be both.’ She’s the one who started that in the dance and it’s taken decades of development for Spain to even truly recognize female singers as equals.”.

Shapiro appreciates the range the roles afford her. “I get to be really strong, but I also get to show a sweet, sincere side. And I actually get to do some physical combat on stage. Normally, as a female, you don’t really get to throw the punches. You’re normally getting slapped or something. I actually hit first and that’s kind of fun.”. This production’s feminist approach enhances the musical’s contemporary relevance. “We have a female director, a female choreographer and a female music director,” Shapiro says. “It puts an interesting, feminine twist onto a show that can seem really chauvinistic and dated in that way. Showing the strength of the female character is really important and it’s something that I’m having a good time doing.”.
